Types of Incentive Programs

There are three basic structures to incentive programs. The type of program is influenced by what your business goals are. What do you want to accomplish?

In establishing goals, you want to make sure they are meaningful. You also want to read both quantitative and qualitative results. The goals can be challenging yet attainable.

The three basic structures for incentive programs are as follows:
  1. Close-ended programs - These programs single out only the top performers, allowing just a certain number of participants to achieve an award. This type of incentive program makes it easier to administer and especially budget for. However, it\'s more apt to award those who are already preforming for you and leave out those that need the most motivation
  2. Open-ended programs - This program awards people who achieve a level of performance. The motivational impact is maximized and you get the greatest amount of participation since everyone is eligible to receive an award.
  3. Plateau programs - This type enable individuals to win ever-increasing levels of awards based on increments. This pushes people to work a little harder to achieve the next level.
You can also choose a combination of structures. For instance, close-ended and open-ended. This allows you to differentiate between your top and median performers. Give higher profile awards to those who achieved or improved the most.

Which ever structure is chosen, make sure your actions promote all aspects of productivity and quality. You don\'t want to meet a goal in one area that causes another to suffer.

Increasing Productivity, Morale & Sales

Times are definitely tough. Consumers are shopping more than buying. Employers are searching for ways to keep morale up and engage their employees. Loyalty is more important then ever.

Salary alone does not motivate. In fact, workers today feel entitled to pay. Direct compensation is not linked to productivity or performance. With incentives, there is no longer that entitlement. Performance is directly tied into compensation. It does tap into a well of productivity.

Incentives provide augmented compensation. One that a worker has a direct say, one that motives the employee to reach the next level and helps a company grow in an ever increasing competitive market.
